A Fresh Look Rooted in Johnnies Heritage
When Saint John’s University asked Akros to design its alternate hockey uniforms, the goal was clear — introduce a bold new visual while staying true to the tradition that defines Johnnies hockey. The result is a custom college hockey jersey that feels both classic and unmistakably fresh.
The blue base immediately sets the tone, creating strong contrast against the program’s signature red and white accents. Across the chest, the flowing “Johnnies” script becomes the focal point, outlined in red for clarity and designed to remain highly visible at game speed. Shoulder numbers and sleeve detailing mirror that treatment, giving the entire uniform a cohesive, balanced identity.
A traditional lace-up collar reinforces the heritage feel, while layered striping at the waist and sleeves delivers timeless collegiate structure. Interior neckline branding and conference marks complete a look that’s intentionally detailed from every angle — proof that great custom hockey uniforms are built through precision, not excess.
Designed With Purpose: From Concept to Ice
Every standout alternate uniform begins with a story. For Saint John’s, the design process centered on honoring decades of program history while creating something distinct enough for defining season moments.
The design team at Akros selected the powder blue as the foundation to provide visual separation from the primary set without drifting from the university’s historic palette. From there, the focus shifted to restraint — classic horizontal striping, traditional block numbering, and collegiate script typography ensured the uniform would feel timeless rather than trend-driven.
Typography refinement played a major role. The Johnnies script was carefully adjusted for spacing, outline weight, and readability so it performs under arena lighting, outdoor glare, and high-speed motion. Small storytelling elements — like the lace-up collar profile and interior wordmarks — connect today’s roster to generations of Saint John’s players who built the program’s legacy.
Construction followed performance. Pro-weight fabrics, reinforced seams, and breathable paneling transform the visual design into a true game-ready custom college hockey uniform. Matching custom hockey socks extend the stripe rhythm from shoulder to skate, completing a fully unified on-ice system.
